Maybe I should be glad I stocked up on them years ago ... LT1086 (to220) from Linear Tech.
I just checked the $ on DK, and it is $6.29 each for the to220 pkg I need.
LM1086 from TI is much less at $2.27 ea.
And TI's LM317 is $1.94 ea.

So why is the LT so much more $?

Today, PSRR issues are more prevalent leaving an abundance of LM317 for bargain hunters.
The High end regulators along with better capacitors are found in products needing to get away from Ripple.

The datasheets for all the regs I mentioned have sample ckts that improve performance (lower ripple, etc) of the device.
So with a LT1086, I'm going to assume that it is intended for applications that require compact PCB designs. Otherwise, just use a cheap 317 and an extra 10uF cap across R2.
