Looks like I will need to build out as new multi media PC so I want it to be low power. Can anyone suggest a good Intel low power chip?

You do know that the performance of low power chips generally sucks -- right. The Atom family may be getting long enough in the tooth so you don't have to compete with all of Asia for supply.

Don't need performance. It is just a multi media PC. On all the time so I would rather have low power.

Is Atom the low power family now?

Hello,

What kind of things do you want to do with the multi media stuff?
A raspberry pi can also do a lot:

Bertus

I wanted plenty of drive space. External can be expensive.

Plus I wanted Windows OS as my current system runs a DVR only available on Windows. And I have a commercial stripping software that I like only available on Windows.
I really wanted to move to linux but I like this combo. But maybe I can be convinced to change over.

Atom was the one they used for netbooks, Asus EEPC, Acer Aspire One, etc. I have the Acer Aspire One with Atom. I never looked, but I don't think they ever made Atom that plugs into a socket, I think they are all integrated on the motherboard. Also, Atoms have integrated video, which can be a problem since Intel is not known for its multimedia chips. I think Intel also used Atoms in the pc sticks that you plug into your flat screen tv, use bluetooth mouse and keyboard for interface, wifi for connection to lan/internet.

I too had a Acer D255 that came with Win7...best thing I ever did was get rid of that & install WinXp....yeah yeah I know XP isn't supported anymore, but it works far more briskly than Win7. Actually come to think of it I have installed the windows version of XBMC on it, haven't had a chance to put it through it's paces yet.
Mine is D270. It works ok. I put ssd in there and upgraded the ram. Since the chipset will only see 4 GB of ram, I put 32 bit Win7 on it, no point wasting 64 bit os on it.

Isn't Atom the mobile line?
Possibly. They were used in the Phoenix Contact product line because they could work inside an industrial cabinet (NEMA-12) without any forced air cooling. I doubt they are the low power family now. If you want to jump into that pool you will be competing with lots of folks with deeper pockets than yours. BTW you really don't get to carp about answers you don't like when you ask an open ended question.
