My first test is mat or gloss screen.
A gloss screen will have more reflections.
I shine a flashlight on the screen with the TV off.
I only buy one where the reflection is dulled, not crisp like a mirror.
And on a big TV, is it a nice picture or a mosaic of pixels.

I've had this one for about 18 months. Absolutely love it. Never seen anything to make me regret the purchase. It has a glossy screen but that's not a problem in the viewing room. Read reviews - not everyone agrees that matte is better.
