An electret mic does not need a preamp when the LM386 power amplifier has a gain of 200 times. But the mic must be powered through a current-limiting resistor and have a decoupling resistor and capacitor.

Maybe the tiny mic from a headset will be damaged by a voltage that is too high. I have used many ordinary 8mm diameter electret mics and one smaller one from a cell phone with this circuit:
