You might grab some data sheets for a number of LCD displays. The variety is such that there could be lot of stuff to learn - serial/parallel, multi line, color/B&W.

Are you looking at using a graphic-type lcd or a character-type lcd?

For character type lcd.

 

If you have not already purchased your character-type LCD then I would suggest you look for one that uses the HD44780 controller. Most of the character type LCD displays are of this type. All you need to do is download a copy of the HD44780 controller data sheet and it will tell you eveything you need to know about interfacing to the display. It also contains the details of initializing the display.
