I'm going to get the "Joe's Knows" resistor kit, transistors and diodes, and capacitor in order to help get a wide range of those components. I haven't ordered them yet, so if anyone has any better kits, please feel free to let me know.

What other components should I get ordered up for general circuit design? I've got a cart going over at digikey now.

I think the cart share works like this, but if anyone has more suggestions on parts then feel free to let me know here or to simply add them to the cart and share the updated link.

Edit, I have more LEDs than one knows what to do with, so I don't need any of those.

Interesting. Is this the IC you are referring to:http://www.futurlec.com/4000Series/CD4093.shtml
Yes.
Any advantages to this vs the 555?
Either polarity input pulse, either polarity output pulse, output swings much closer to the rails for more solid FET turn on and turn off.

And - this is a true monostable. It has positive feedback which makes the output pulse completely independent of the input conditions. That is not the case with a 555. Also, the 4093 circuit is naturally edge-triggered; it does not require a coupling capacitor (and its associated time constant) to differentiate an input level change and prevent it from messing up the output pulse width.

The 555 is a great part, and the dual-comparator set points are much more accurate and repeatable than a typical CMOS input stage transition levels; but as a monostable it has ... emotional needs.

Thanks for the info! I'll order up the parts to make your circuit as well! I'll post the new cart when I have them all added. I've got to actually get some work done today that pays me. haha.

I've updated the cart a bit.

I've picked up an assorted inductor kit as well. What are some other items I could pick up at digikey that are commonly used?

I've got inductors, resistors (1/4 axial and pots), caps, transistors, and diodes in some kits I've found that seem well put together.
