If you have one like that there truly is nothing you can do. If you’re lucky and avoided that, the solution could “just” be software. I use VLC for all my video players.

From everything I have read its a unresolved driver conflict issue. All the hardware is capable of doing it but the drivers for the HDMI card and the drivers for the audio systems don't mess and thusly one blocks the other from allowing access to the HDMI audio output choice.

Now that the laptop and its drivers are a few years old Toshiba, Intel and Realtek have no interest in fixing the problem.

At worst I just have to run a second line set from my home theater audio system and put the audio in after the TV and not through the TV if I want to use the HDMI feed for video.

Although I am half tempted to set up one of my old XP PC's as a stripped down dedicated A/V source unit and just go though that with a remote desktop link via the home WiFi network. I have a old but good unit that can run 4 TB of hard drives plus has a overkill video card as well that's serving no purpose any more.
