The modern version of the socialist Gift Economy is the quickly developing Chinese total surveillance state with a heavy jackboot of coercion. Share a cookie and you become the designated cookie sharer. Clean a bathroom and become the designated crapper cleaner. They will make sure you stay in your place with a government police force that spies on all, to make sure all, is shared. This quickly develops into The Grift Economy where scams and ripoffs for wealth accumulation are allowed to flourish with bribes and kickbacks to the socialist Gift Economy controllers.

For small indigenous small-group situation societies it might work if war or the threat of war is used as the cohesive force instead of direct coercion otherwise it's just another IMO Utopian dream that turns into a dystopian nightmare at larger modern scales.

AKA: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khmer_Rouge_Killing_Fields

The judicial process of the Khmer Rouge regime, for minor or political crimes, began with a warning from the Angkar, the government of Cambodia under the regime. People receiving more than two warnings were sent for "re-education", which meant near-certain death. People were often encouraged to confess to Angkar their "pre-revolutionary lifestyles and crimes" (which usually included some kind of free-market activity; having had contact with a foreign source, such as a U.S. missionary, international relief or government agency; or contact with any foreigner or with the outside world at all), being told that Angkar would forgive them and "wipe the slate clean." They were then taken away to a place such as Tuol Sleng or Choeung Ek for torture and/or execution.
The principal cause of misery and stagnation in the world isn’t a lack of food or education. It’s violence and lawlessness.

So I can guess at least joeyd and nsaspook are on the side of no socialism wanted in the USA.
Socialism is Communism's little brother. It don't take long for it to grow up and turn to exactly that.
One step leads to the other.
I wish all the people that thought it's this great cure for all that's ailing society would move to one of them Countries that charge up to 90% in taxes and then they would change their minds. Socialism is like El Dorado, Elysium or Agartha it doesn't exist. Socialism has never worked and will never work! It's a dream until we do away with money

Just look at the failing health care in Canada. It cost too much and then your divvied it out when a Doctor can get around to you.
Sounds like single payer system to me. Justin Trueau just started backing off this "everybody's welcome crap" Cos he finally seen it don't work.

USA Today said:
In what has become an increasingly regular mission, Canadian representatives visited the U.S this week to warn immigrants fearful over President Trump's immigration crackdown that they can't simply rush north of the border to find safe haven.
We don't want to be beggars MrChips! That's why we think the way we do.
Keep our money, Make the government stop wasting, spend it where it's really needed not on some other Country
It's called conservatism. It means to take care or your own not everybody else.
It's not the American people's job to be the police of the world, It's not our job to pay for all the other Countries problems> Let them tax the crap outta them and let them pay for their own problems! That's why they take taxes up isn't it.

The streets of Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, and LA thrive on the "gift economy." Everyone has a place to sleep and most necessities, including drugs, are free. Bathrooms are limited, but Starbucks has jumped in to help. Great place to live and raise the next generation.
