Re: Air Coil ID/OD vs. field shape and strength.
...Interesting info here, but I need more help.

Purpose of coil: I'm seeking a means to attract [and later repel] a magnet from about a 1/2 to 3/4" distance and +/- 1/4" vertical variation.
[A solenoid coil works but doesn't fit...]

I wound air coils by hand, and after a few tries with different wire and physical sizes I made one that works well, but have no clue about number of turns, and this thread helped. Thanks!!

With additional help from your link I found that I departed a LOT from the "Brooks Coil" target by using a 1/2" thickness, 1/4" ID and 1.5" OD "pancake" shaped coil. I used 24 AWG Self Bonding wire..

1] Is the proportion I made significantly inefficient in magnetic field strength?? (-- I don't care about the inductance)

2] I need to test with another coil with the Brooks proportion -- but I don't have my Customer's 'stuff' to test with now.
>> More importantly I need to learn more about this field [no pun intended...].

3] *** I thought Amp-Turns were all that mattered, and that the larger OD and smaller ID would make a larger and stronger field. I gather that this is NOT quite true.*** Please advise.***

4] I found this forum because I want to estimate the number of turns in my coil which gets way too hot. [It served the need for getting an idea of field strength required.] A current of about 2 Amps at 8 VDC works well The resistance increased about 20% so the internal temp is perhaps 110 Degrees C including 30 C ambient.

5] I don't want to bother with new calcs until I know more about ID/OD ratio and relationship to field size and strength.

I look forward to your advice.
Thanks, John
