OBTW do you know of an (on-line) reference providing a schematic of such a system? --- Annoyingly my searches have led only to 'standard' (i.e. 'flyback') designs...

Not sure why you'd need a schematic to envisage; stator coil, points and LT winding all in parallel.

On one occasion I encountered a Yamaha 125 with a molded diode assembly interposed between the stator/points unit and the coil hidden somewhere on the frame - I didn't investigate what that was all about and there was no workshop manual to hand anyway.

Having that spring suddenly to mind also reminded me about the ignition switch which is also in parallel with the stator coil, points and LT winding - closing the switch (as in what would normally be switched on) shorts it out and inhibits any spark generation.

I've be 'caught-out' on those grounds a few times myself!

There's usually a tap on the lighting stator coil, a half-wave rectifier charges a battery for horn, indicators and brake light. The main lighting is usually AC straight from the coil. Some have 3-stator coils, I think they separate ignition, rectifier and AC lighting.
