ID numbers to PCBs

We are working with prototype at the moment but there will be mass production of more then 50 PCBs once the prototype is tested successfully. The question is how do we put ID on them ? I don't think we can do on Silkscreen in the Layout because all the boards will be tested and then given the ID names. Do we have any suggestion ?

It is a chip that has a unique serial number programmed into each one. You read it using 1-wire serial protocol.

We have FPGA and external Flash on the board. We can do this in the firmware as well.

Actually I was thinking physical sticky printed label as physical baord number shown on the PCBs

I mark board ID with a black Sharpie directly on the PCB.
Another solution is I use a label machine and print tiny labels that are stuck on top of ROMs or MCUs.
