I only recently learned about them through adafruit. For my purposes, I'd probably buy the adafruit breakouts to avoid hand soldering SMDs. Unfortunately, none of the capacitive sensing ICs seem to come in DIP packages.

 

I noticed it was not available in dip but SMD breakouts make for easier working with chips like this.
