It was kinda funny cause when I came back after like 10 months my PM said you have 2 msg's. 1st one said You've been banned for 1 week. I just laughed a little then moved on. I know nothing about so many subjects. And I'm happy if I ask stupid questions on other forums and someone responds.

Just recently on the PTC Mathcad forum, the most basic questions... And they responded. I am very thankful.

I want to think other people feel the same way when we help them.

This is neither here, nor there. This is an English site, not Hindi.

People here have a right to expect English here, and, in the case of AG, he demands it. Now, that said, there are people that do not know English and are forced to use Google translate. Then there are those that hear English and think they can spell it phonetically. English is not a language you can spell phonetically, and trying to figure out what someone is attempting to convey becomes particularly tiresome when their question is rubbish to begin with.

I have no problem helping someone that is trying to understand, but when they can't be bothered to go through a translator to make their post coherent, well, let's just say I have a much harder time helping them....


AG, I have noticed that when you do help people, you put a lot of effort into it. Though I haven't been a recipient of your help, thank you for trying to help others. If this decision is final, this forum loses a knowledgeable, helpful member.

...and I addressed that. I said that those that simply type what they hear come off as sounding/being lazy. They can't be bothered to pull their native tongue through a translator in order to make coherent sentences. Other languages do not have the same grammatical structure as English and attempting to use the grammar from another language is a recipe for disaster, Greek is a good example. Simply writing the post in Google translate would, for the most part, correct the grammatical and spelling errors.

 

I think I admire those who try to communicate without a translator.

I think it takes more effort to try sounding out words yourself than it does to just copy and paste a bunch of text (often very poorly translated) by Google.

There's an interesting video which I'll try to find, where they put the "Fresh Prince of Bel air" through a translator. It's amazing what comes out - "apricot" being one of the best.


I think we can all look past spelling mistakes, if you can understand it without much bother, then there's no problem. If it puts you off that much, don't reply.

I'm not defending those who put no information about their questions, or those who expect others to do their work. But that is not the same as those who cannot use English fluently.

 

You have misunderstood my point.

If a person does not know English, translate it. More power to those that can write in English without knowing English as a primary language, it makes me wonder if they can speak it, but that's another topic for another time.

Agreed. I am referring to the posts that require much to attempt to understand. The ones I have to go through and say what is written out loud before I understand what's being said. At that point, I can either respond, or not, but not responding means I just wasted the time I took trying to understand the post in the first place!

Maybe it's because I deal with an international community of engineers on a daily baises, but I honor anyone who is making a good effort, even when it's not perfect. And many who are trying are doing as good or better than a translator, and learning along the way, so I support that. When I see a post that annoys me, I have a simple solution, I stop reading it.

LOL! If I could get credit for hitting "Thanks you" a thousand times, I would. Some members put more effort into carping about spelling mistakes than actually trying to answer the question, even when it's not all that hard to figure out what the question is.

I can just about understand the language. In this case, it is tough. I would ask him if he could polish up his language, but it would be no biggie.

What seems to irk you is the lack of information given by some people. This does not always mean bad english. People who use perfect English would irk you just the same.

"Sirs, I'm trying to make a big balloon and talk with the people on the ground, with radio. If you can help, please give tell me now, it's urgent!"

Better english, but the lack of information is what you find annoying.

If it was in poor english, but with relevant information, would it annoy you so much?

If either situation annoys you move on.

Again, it isn't the spelling, nor is it the grammar, it is a lack of understanding. Poor grammar will happen, we are techies after all, and spelling is hard enough for native speakers, what I am referring to is the times when the grammar or spelling leads to confusion.

When you cannot convey the information properly, the translator needs to be used.
