Never heard of washing the roads with saline before anywhere but that's what they did. I-95 was shut down at the GA/FLA border.
Using a liquid salt solution is popular up here in NE Ohio. Problem with just salting is below about 15 degrees F the salt is not effective. They usually use the salt solutions ahead of the weather as it helps when the snow and ice. Problem with salt or brine solution is it eats vehicles. The car wash washes the under carriage so every few days it's car wash time. :) Brine aside they are experimenting with other chemical solutions. The past few days have been sub zero but today, last I looked it was a balmy 25 and we expect low 30s for the weekend so while not warm it beats sub zero. :)

Back when my parents were living in Pittsburgh, Pennsyvania not only salted the roads, they also would not pass by state required auto inspection any vehicle with body corrosion. Talk about a Catch 22! Yeah, I know why, but it was a real boon for auto dealers who could buy cars that couldn't pass the state exam and sell a reasonably otherwise good car out-of-state! Here the only corrosion is from the ocean onshore breeze carrying saltwater vapors onshore. Or, down in Florida, they allow vehicles to drive on the beach and after a few years of that they are ruined even worse than by salted roads.

Figures, those kids at GA Tech are pretty sharp but I didn't think they came up with this at the DOT all by their lonesome. Shows how long I've been out of snow country. Been over 40 years at least.

I remember in PA they used cinder from the steel mills on the roads. I grew up born NYC and then on Long Island. Long before snow plows during heavy snows they used a grader and then traffic hard pounded the snow. Now something Long Island has is plenty of sand. Dump trucks with two guys in the back would drop sand on the hard packed snow. Actually this gave pretty good traction. Up here where I am now we have salt mines extending out over the bed of lake Erie so it's all about salt. Yep, the salt that eats vehicles alive. :)

Happy for Vegas. We had an ice storm last night but are finally in the low 30s so it's slowly melting. I am so done with all of this. End of February I plan to be in Florida and I am so looking forward to that. :) Next week back into the low 20s and teens at night.
