Here is a version of switched LED that maintains = V for all 3 SW positions. Some figures are based on a 3W LED & may be different with different LEDs. If the 2 strings were perfectly balanced in current , then a R2 could be added to other string to preserve balance. D is Shottky 1N5817.

now you're my HERO too. the dp3t switches are so expensive, i could run 2 drivers cheaper.
now if i can find a reasonably priced sp3t in a round rocker i'll be set. why are 3t switches so expensive?
only concern is overhead voltage with the additional schottky.
i'll give it a shot.
