Those two connections in my last posting are between Out and High. Another (fixed) resistor would connect Out and Low.
I guess my best bet is to get a keyboard that has a terminal connected to each key, not a matrix one like I have.
I do want to keep the circuit simple and reliable and make sure that I don't affect the rest of the "black box".
For now I'll just use 4 keys of the keyboard - like in the circuit from Posting #6 above.
