Hi All

I have a rechargeable hand held Black & Decker screwdriver that I can't locate the power supply for. On the item itself it says it is a 3.3V device, and it charges by sitting within a charging unit via connectors on its side. Clever little thing it is!

So, I don't have any 3.3V power supplies, but plenty of 5V ones. What would experts advise I do to reduce the 5V to 3.3V from one of these PSU's please?

Tomorrows project :)

Thanks

They wouldn't. You can't charge a battery with the same voltage it puts out. You need a higher voltage with a resistor to limit the current flow. Whip us some specs on what kind of battery and what size.

Doesn't those drills have built in chargers ?
May be a simple adapter could work if you can find out the specs.

Aaaah ! IC, the charger is the thingy that holds the drill assy.
OK...no worries, take it apart, find the battery and post some pics of inside.
From there we can identify everything.

No I don't think it is... it was a unit that plugged into the wall power socket.

More than happy though to take it apart and have a look! Will be tomorrow now as I am off out this evening, so will post details tomorrow.

"Consists of 6v alkaline cordless screwdriver"
"input voltage: 6 v dc"
https://www.mtmc.co.uk/Black-and-Decker-9019-Type-3-Screwdriver-Spare-Parts__p-98238.aspx
The search results are B.S.
I think the next stop is:
http://batteryuniversity.com/
and measure it yourself to be sure. Read the label...anything you can do to nail down some specs.

ps, I'm fading fast. Prolly need to take a nap pretty soon.:(
No worries - enjoy your nap! I am off out shortly too, so will be tomorrow when I take it apart to look at the batteries within it.

Recharging batteries is not as simple as hooking a voltage source up to them. For some battery types you need to be very careful about the charging profile and monitor the device to prevent it from being damaged, catching fire, or even exploding. What needs to be done specifically depends on the type of battery. To complicate things, the circuitry to do all of that can be located in the battery itself, in the device it powers, in the charger, or in some combination of the three.

I'd recommend going to Black and Decker's website and seeing if you can find a charger for it and then buying it, either directly from them or from eBay or somewhere else. If you know the charger that it takes, you may also be able to identify suitable substitutes from other vendors.

We need to know if the battery is OK and also need to know how many cells are used to determine the charger capacity
Ok, superb advice, thanks so much. I have to head out now as I am at friends for dinner this evening, but will take apart and advise tomorrow. Thanks guys! Really appreciate your help. I honestly thought to myself I would postr this thread when I did thinking by the time I got up tomorrow morning maybe a few people might have responded... wowza!

Great support, kudos to ya all!
