A point to consider regarding the 'speed' of the 4026 when used as a frequency counter, is that a pre-divide by 10 fast counter at the input of the counter is often used.
So the counter could have two inputs, direct and divide by 10, this will extend the maximum frequency from say 2.5MHz to 25MHz.
eg: When measuring a frequency of say 10MHz, a resolution of 10Hz is not going to be a problem
