I study technology on the internet a lot. I study engineering a lot. I have a really bad memory. But I work hard. I bought my first breadboard a few years ago. Used to use high currents that damaged the breadboard, I am more careful now. I practice building electronic circuits on a breadboard. Tried to build a boost converter, that was too hard. Voltage divider is easy. Tried to build a inverting amplifier out of operational amplifier, that was too hard. Buy transistor, different models, and use them as switches, that is easy. Biasing transistors right is easy.

I used arduino uno a lot. I program the arduino uno a lot. I used an arduino uno to rotate a motor in different directions, in a predetermined pattern, or in response to the pressing of a button, that's easy. Bought ov7674 camera module, tried to get arduino to receive video from camera and display video on laptop that was too hard.

There is a reason the military doesn't use motion sensors in a similar situation. Unless you are camping on an open plain or in the desert, the surrounding plants and trees make motion sensors pretty ineffective.

Instead, they use vibration sensors, trip wires (as @nsaspook mentioned) and pressure sensors. You might also be able to do some processing on audio to figure out someone is out there.

Would radio waves pass through surrounding trees and plants and allow me detect movement at say 50 feet?

We're playing the game of 101 Q & A because you have not defined the problem clearly enough.

Title: How far can a motion sensor detect
Are there any motion sensors that can detect a person that is 80 feet away?
I hope this will help you.
Here is what we seem to be describing:
  1. detect a person up to 80 feet away
  2. detect a person moving
  3. location: wooded area, trees, bush, wildlife
  4. budget: don't know
  5. problem #1: how to penetrate bush
  6. problem #2: how to prevent false positive from moving leaves, bush, trees
  7. problem #3: how to prevent false positive from wildlife

The problem is not about finding a motion sensor that works to 80 feet. The problem is how to detect a moving person from anything else moving that is not a person.

I would ask border security how they do it.

Here is one solution:

If your motion detector operates a light bulb then you can substitute the bulb with a socket to plug adapter and plug the fan into that. One like THIS

If your goal is to power some other device, you can always plug it into the adapter. But like Mr. Chips said: "We're playing the game of 101 Q & A because you have not defined the problem clearly enough." Not sure if I read YOU want to power a motor, maybe it was something someone else said. Just not sure.

As Yaakov said, get a dog. Also guinea fowl or a goose are very good detectors.
Always useful, you can feed them to bears, tigers or crocs.
Good luck..
