I was wondering if it would be a simple matter to add some copper wire to it's length and then drill a hole in the plastic cover so that it will help keep the extra length straight up.

Will something like that work? If so, do I add extra wire length to the little wire at the top, add copper to the silver metal shaft and lengthen it, or lengthen the thicker wire at the base?

 

Adding extra length to this antenna will just de-tune it. If you want more performance, buy (or build) a high gain antenna that is the same frequency as your router.

You could also make the antenna directional to help with better signal strength.. Let me find the vid from youtube..
