I am working on a project that requires a map of an area within 100 meters of a given point (actually a 180 degree arc of the area). After some quick research, I believe the correct sensor would be a frequency modulating continuous wave radar operating at 77ghz which is the type of system used in automobiles for automatic braking. I would appreciate some direction in identifying the hardware and building a prototype that will forward data to a PC. Specifically:
1. Is FMCW radar at 77ghz the best sensor to utilize?
2. Is there an existing system that will "sweep" an area or will I have to build a mechanical system to rotate the sensor across the target area?
3. What hardware should I use to build a prototype?
Obviously, I am early in the process so any direction would be appreciated.
