I recovered a few Hard Disk Drive motors, the 3 terminal version. From what I could gather from the web, they require a 3 Phase drive.

My question is, whether they are to be driven by a 3 phase "pulse" stream or a 3 Phase "clock". Please refer to the attachment.

The upper graph visually shows what I mean by a "pulse" and the lower one, the "clock".

Thanks ericgibbs. I did go thru' the links given, but nowhere does it say positively whether Pulse or Clock is the right choice.

http://www.instructables.com/id/Run-HDD-spindle-motor-using-IC-555-4017-L293D/ describes it as pulse driven,

http://www.eevblog.com/forum/suggestions/best-way-to-drive-a-spindle-brushless-motor-from-a-hdd/ describes a clock drive.

Or, maybe, it's to be between both for power efficiency.

By applying 3 pulses sequentially to the windings, the motor will turn.
I would use a L293D as a motor pulse driver.

I think Elektor magazine did an article on driving those a few years ago.
