Both of those assortments are a little short on variety of values and long on quantity. The price is good but you'll end up buying additional values later.

If you are going to buy resistors from ebay, try to look for a seller that has kits/assortments that follow one of the E series of values like E12, E24, etc...

I second this - The E12/E24 series were designed to give a convenient spread of values, and if you need a more precise value, they are easy to combine in series to generate it.

 

I bought an assortment of 1/4W carbon film 5% resistors at a local store for a pretty low price. They are Velleman brand.

 

The Velleman 10 color stranded wire kit is also a good one. I'm still plowing through the pack, although I finally did run out of red and green.

We used to have some mom and pop shops here, but they went belly up with the economy a few years ago. The only place I'm aware of that I can get discrete components locally is Radio Shack. Conveniently spread across the city, but expensive, and lacking in variety.

Same story here. There used to be a good store here in Omaha, but it closed about 10 years back. Radio Shack was good many years ago for a variety of items, but then they changed. They are starting to get a little better, ever so slowly though. I only use them when I know they have what I need and it is kind of a rush to get something finished.

 

Unless my order is above around $200, I use Digikey with USPS Priority Mail shipping. Above that, I ship with Fedex ground for the insurance and tracking. Digikey is a first class operation and I can recommend them without hesitation (even if they are a bunch of good fer nothin' Vikings fans).

Second choice is Mouser, who are also very good and usually have slightly lower prices. But I always get things a day or two sooner from Digikey.

I don't buy from eBay very much because the extra time I have to spend reading the fine print and checking out sellers isn't worth what I save on most things. Not saying never, just not very often.

I was actually centering on BGMicro myself. Seems they have the easiest search for products of most of the vendors. And the availability pricing looks fair.

There is 1 local electronics shop here in town. I gave them a call this morning, and made some inquiries. Pricing appears to be competitive, but they don't keep some things in stock, so I'd have to wait. They're not so much an electronics supplier, as a supplier of industrial tools and parts.

 

Not to worry.........the youth group was legit.........it's when one tries to turn on the subterfuge, that it never works out................

Hey, Steve, might I suggest that when you post advertisments for your company that you don't use a name tied to your LinkIn account naming you as the founder of such a site, as commercial advertising is against the Terms of Service.

 

I prefer Digikey over most distributors, though you can learn what products will be cheaper from each distributor. I have had some issues with Mouser, coalescing into a near year-long attempt for them to fix a mistake they made, but I know plenty of people that have never had problems. Jameco had some decent stuff, but tends to overcharge...

I think I'm going to have to check out BGmicro, thanks to Bill.

All of the big component houses have pretty decent parametric searches some are better than others for certain types of components. For example, Digikey has a nice search for mosfets for the "analog challenged".

Either I never noticed it before or Jameco recently added a parametric search. I have not bought much from them but always hated their search tool.

I really miss the days of the local stores too. We used to have at least 2 or 3 here in Pittsburgh. One was right downtown, just down the street from my electronics school. We had one store in the area, called Olsons, that bought up surplus components like, speakers, amps, turntables. Basically any electronic assembly item. It was a hackers paradise. I can imagine what a store like that might have today.

There is something special about being able to hold something in your hands before you buy it.

Didn't notice it was a year old thread. I need to get into the habit of checking dates.

 

My go-to source is Digikey. Over the weekend I noticed I'd lost an IC I needed, so I ordered 4 of them Monday morning. Shipped U.S. Postal Service First Class Mail (the cheapest) for some 2.50-3 bucks.

Had them on my doorstep in NY Wednesday afternoon.
