Half of the people I know are capable of making a safe gas system addition that would also pass an inspection!! Those are the folks who also replace their water heaters themselves with no problems. Certainly one must know and understand what they are doing, but it is not a mystery nor any secret as to how gas piping is done.
Of course in some areas there are rules as to who can do that sort of work. I did ask in one nearby community about that. The response was that I had to buy a license for $450 to do it. Clearly it was a money maker there.. I did explain to a few potential clients in that community about why i was not doing those projects for them.
