I want to power an amplifier with say +- 5V Vcc. How can I achieve a -5V from a USB powered system?

U can but I doubt a USB port can withstand the load.

 

Depends on how much current do you need.

 

If it is a fairly light load you can use a switched capacitor voltage inverter such as this.

For larger loads some sort of switch mode converter is necessary.

These are just two units I found, there are many more that may fit your needs.
