You have to consider how well-educated folks were in the past, especially about science. Before CAD and especially following the "Victorian Age" objects had a certain ornate character to them in addition to their usefulness. I have some very old Mechanical, Steam, and Electrical books from the 1700's up to 1940's belonging to my great-great-grandfather and on down that are fun to peruse from time to time. To me, at least, much more entertaining than old Sears Roebuck catalog reprints which are also fun to peruse. Kids today are learning subjects in high school that I didn't encounter until college and I'm sure it's been the same for each generation.
