I want to use a 12v IR Beam Sensor to cut the flow of electricity to a 12v electromagnet thereby releasing the magnet. What elements do I need to make this happen?

What distance will it have to cover? What does the electromagnet do? What environment will it be in? How much can you spend?

16" distance. Electromagnet releases a latch. The device will be indoors. TBD on $$ but ideally not a lot of money.

Essentially, I want the IR beam to break, send a signal to ??? to cut the power to the magnet only for a second.

OK, so a board something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Gikfun-avoidance-Reflective-Photoelectric-Intensity/dp/B07FJLMLVZ/ used with a retro reflector (like a small white bicycle reflector, for example).

With a module something like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DFT2WDS/

And you can get latches that release when turned on, which is better in general to keep it turned on full time.

Interfacing these two will requite a few components, so if you are up for learning something, an Arduino would be a better way to go than the delay module, and there are plenty of people here who would love to help you learn how.

That's a great start. Thank you very much!

Do you want to build from scratch, or buy modules on ebay or an industrial distributor and wire them together?

Voltage and current of the magnet?

Do you want magnet power restored after 1 sec even if the beam still is broken?

Is this for an automatic doggy-door?

Where are you located?

You might check " Related Forum Posts " at the bottom of this page, " Ir beam break sensor help ".
Exchange a P ch. FET for the N ch. FET. Use Tx & Rx in 900 nm range.
