Hello, I joining my local IBEW union as a 1st year apprentice in a few weeks and have been reading a lot to jump start my learning. I am considering buying the National Electrical Code 2008 book as well. http://www.amazon.com/National-Electrical-Code-Protection-Association/dp/0877657904/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1197145047&sr=8-1

Seeing as how this book is the essential code book for electrical workers would I expect the book to be given to me at one point anyways or should I just buy it now?

It's a shame that a new one is coming out, I could have accidentally sent you the PDF for the 2005 edition.... But as far as expecting it to get it or not, I'm not sure, but a lot of apprentices in my program did purchase there own copy if that helps.

First off, WELCOME TO THE BROTHERHOOD! :D Which local, if you don't mind my asking? (I'm with 48.)

I would be quite amazed if they didn't provide you with a copy of the code book as part of your texts for Apprenticeship training. If your Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee works the way ours does, you'll either get one paid for by the Training Fund, or you'll save money by getting through the Committee.

In the mean-time, I'd be happy to look things up for you in my copy.

Excellent places for you to continue with your "jump start" include the OSHA website, the NIOSH website, and these:

Try to get as wide an exposure to as many elements of the trade as possible during your apprenticeship. Its a whole lot easier to broaden experience base as an apprentice than it will be as a journeyman. Example: after ten years of trying, I still can't get any OJT on nurse-call systems. But because I polished a few strands of optical fiber during my apprenticeship, I've got guys begging me to let them help whenever I have such a task.

Training a journeyman on the job is expensive. Get as wide a variety of training as possible while your employers can still afford it!
