and purely theorethical if N.America would change from 120 to 240 v, then for 240v would be standarn NEMA 5 plugs and sockets, or NEMA 6 ? Regards
Off topic but interesting. My grandfather was a doctor living in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn NY. Having the ways and means he was an early subscriber to electricity (The Consolidated Edison Company). Early on in those days the power was still DC. When ConEd made the huge switch to AC subscribers with devices like refrigerators, another scarce item of the day, were given AC to DC converter packs so the DC compressor and fan motors in refrigerators and other appliances could run off the new AC current. Obviously light bulbs didn't care.

DC power remained in NYC till 2007 when the last DC power line was severed. Growing up NYC I still remember the trolley lines which were DC powered and remaining still today the entire NYC subway system and Long Island Rail Road is still DC powered by the infamous "third rail". Going way out on Long Island meant changing to a diesel locomotive about half way out. :) I don't see the US adopting standard 220 volts as household common voltage anytime soon. Look how long it took for digital TV and high definition TV to replace a 1920s standard. Even as NYC transitioned there were all the skyscraper elevator motors running DC current.

Obviously light bulbs didn't care.
I remember one incident during my apprenticeship of converting Oxford Observatory from 110vdc to 240v ac, They were about the last that had held out.
When we switched on the power, someone had left an old style original bulb in a light fixture, it lit up OK with no problem.
Max.

There might be a DC standard instead?

But, for now, all fixtures now require a neutral, because of automation things that need power. It basically meas 3 wires with ground to the switch. Two for the swich loop, one neutral and one ground.

The light fixture gets a N, G and L.

I wish better energy for N.America because sometimes when I look on the bigger usage in the USA for.ex. than european then I think that it should be inversely, that America should have 240v and Europe 120v

The voltage used will not have a direct effect (ignoring IR losses for higher current in lower voltage mains) on the energy used so it does not matter much.

I very much doubt going to NEMA 6.
There is already 240v outlet standard.
I don't see any change happening soon, too much at stake.
Max.
Yes I think probably all voltages would be doubled if 120v would, then NEMA 5 could be for 200 or 240v single leg and NEMA 6 for 400 or 480v split phase or 2 from 3 phases. I thought also about theoretically different way if voltage would be 100/200v than instead 277v would be accordingly 230v, which is also in that range 200 to 250v
