That piece by "Y" in post #179 is certainly scarey, to say the least. The very worst is that it is so reasonably believable that those not considering the secondary results of their actions could actually pass such rules. It seems to happen frequently in one of our far-western states here in the US.
It certainly does lead rational thinkers towards evaluating the claimed benefits of the total darkness concept for crime prevention. I have some inside information showing that the vast majority of crimes are done by lawbreakers, folks who refuse to abide by the posted rules. Thus making the possession of whatever may be utilized for self defense a crime, it assures that only lawbreakers will have such items. I see this as an intrinsically flawed logic.

People will carry kerosene (storm) lanterns.

If those are prohibited too, then back to carrying torches. And I don’t mean electric torches, but old fashioned burning sticks.

Britain to axe up to 1.5m lampposts — see how it would look

Back when I visited Berlin in the early 2000s, I was suitably impressed with the quaint nightly appearance of many neighborhoods. I couldn’t pinpoint exactly the reason, but could see a soft and pleasant light.
Back at home, I learned that Berlin still used many gas lamps for its streetlights, the World’s largest concentration.
This however, is rapidly changing as they are being replaced by more efficient LED lighting.

That's one of the things that was very nice on our last trip to Hawaii. The street lamp Tiki torches on Waikiki Beach.

On the subject of total darkness, this has been a few of my experiences: Late late late one night in Tennessee I was driving under a moonless cloudless sky. I glanced out the windshield to the sky and saw a bagillian stars. Driving along that lonely country road I noticed that houses and trees to either side of me were easily seen without the aid of a light shining on them. So I flicked my headlights off for a brief moment and could still see the road. So I shut my lights off completely and could still see the road. And easily I'd add. Of course the sky was clear. No haze or smoke from a distant fire.

Conversely, I was in a church camp in Big Bear California (US). Was out in the field when a power failure occurred. No moon, clouds and trees everywhere. I couldn't see a darn thing. Not even the tip of my nose it was so dark. I didn't have a flash light and it was long before cell phones, so I had no source of light at all. I had to sit there and wait for power to come back on.

Finally, I was in a sub-basement of a warehouse. Some idiot thought it would be funny to turn the lights off and leave me to languish in the darkness. And dark it was. Not a lick of light. Fortunately my wrist watch had a lamp to illuminate the dial. Believe it or not I used that wrist watch to navigate my way out. You'd be surprised how little light you need to see things once your eyes adjust. Gosh we're spoiled.

Where I'm at it's too much light pollution to see the comet. I so want to see a comet before I die. That, northern lights and a volcano. Sure, I could go to see some of those things but it's just too much bother.

Sailors know dark.
Always been a distant fantasy of mine, to be out on the ocean at night hundreds of miles away from any sources of light.

We visited the Grand Canyon (Arizona US). Took a bus tour that brought us back after dark. There were no parking lot lights. We got off the bus to total darkness. Just the Milky Way overhead. Fortunately I had a cell phone and was able to light up the walkway back to the parking lot. Then some idiot sat there with his high beams on for 20 minutes or more while I "Wanted" to see the night sky without the interference of lights. Or stupidity.

Yeah, I'd bet sailors know dark. Especially on a could covered night.

The old bulb flat style bulb looks pretty good and seems well built. I'll report back here after 45 years on the new ones. :D
