Is there a way to implement a double password scheme in an android phone?

For instance, I want it to show only certain available apps if I use password one, and all the available apps if I use password two.

AFAIK, no.

In fact, IIRC, even in multi-user mode, all users have access to all installed apps.

In multi user mode, each user has his own home screens to populate at will. You could do it that way, but each would still be able to access "hidden" apps.
Interesting... ok... here's my boggle... I've just installed my bank's app into my phone, and my fear is to one day get mugged at gunpoint and have the crook take my phone and ask for its password... imagine what would happen next...

There would be two choices available for me:
  • Die like a man
  • Trick and deceive

I'd very much rather trick and deceive...

There are apps on Play store that will root the phone for you. I set up online banking, but after reading about the Yahoo stolen data, I'm reluctant to use it now. Had to change so many passwords. Walking to the bank is easier.

Even if you were to steal a phone's colmplete data set, it would be nearly impossible to use it to hack your bank accounts. That's because the crooks would need to have physical access to the phone's SIM card.

But I sympathize with your fear...

I used to login from a pc. Using the banks app would be safer I suppose. Apart from Ebay and Paypal, all my password are similar. I know they should be different, but who keeps track of ten different passwords.

welcome to the 99% of the population... including myself...

And yes, I do like to login from my PC better than my phone too. But the phone's app is extremely practical for emergencies, which are not uncommon in my line of business.

Third option: draw my concealed firearm and have a better- than- average chance of surviving the confrontation.

You're in Mexico. Don't they just march you to the ATM at gun point and force you to withdraw cash? Or hold you hostage while a relative does it? And then kill you anyway?

I'd take my chances carrying -- illegal or not.

The first option around here is limited by the maximum you can draw in 24 hours. Hard to decide balance between practical and safe.

The second became again, quite frequent. The time to complete the whole business is how much the gasoline in the tank lasts. They keep moving all the time, with you preferently in the trunk. Always the get much much more this way.

Update. Samsung's latest OS has included a feature called Secure Folder. Which is a folder in the app list that can only be accessed through a password and whose apps can only exchange information with other apps present in said folder. This is more or less what I was looking for.
This folder can be rendered "invisible" in a way, by going to Settings -> Lock screen and security -> Secure Folder -> Show Secure Folder.
