I did much of my "take-apart-then-reassemble" back in grade school and junior high school. After that I had a lot less free time.
Pretty much the same here. Also, once I got to high school I was getting more involved in classes and other more-or-less organized activities that scratched that itch.

I had a best friend (alcohol took him). He and I would build all kinds of crazy stuff. We wanted a go-cart so we took a self driven lawn mower and turned that into the back wheels of a wooden cart we made. We made home-made rockets that never flew but often just blew up. We messed with TV's; that's where I took a great shocking to the chin from a large console CRT. HOLLEE PHHhh, did that hurt. Heard a high voltage leak and got closer to hear where it was coming from. "Found it" as I lay back recovering from the heavy weight boxer punch to the chin. We built our mini-bikes and wanted to make them faster. We built a supercharger for my motor. We swore it was faster, though it was probably more our imagination than anything else. When we started driving we modified the heck out of our cars. 5 horns, a whistle, a siren and a PA (from CB radio). Car stereo with power booster, 4 6x9's, 2 mid-rangers on the doors (2 door) and tweeters just above the sun visors. When The Doors played "Rider on the Storm" you would swear you could feel the rain. BFF put a Gerard turn table in his van and we modified a home stereo system to work in the van too. Talk about prolific builders. Giant kites nearly as big as a hang-glider. Had to tie it off to a tree. And pulling it down was a chore.

Our bicycles were modified too. My 10-speed had a banana seat, sissy bar and ape hanger handlebars. Goofiest looking bike on the road. But we rode it from home to Laguna Beach and most of the way back. We must have done over 100 miles that day. What killed us was that stupid bicycle generator on my bike. Flipped it on and it stopped me dead in my tracks. BFF said "Let's switch bikes". We probably got another quarter mile and we both were done. Dad had to come with the pickup to get us. Had we finished our ride we would have done easily 125 miles.

Then girls happened. And we were done for sure.
