DMM recommendation and review of this monitor?

Afternoon everyone.

I have a Southwire 10030S DMM that I used for the house and projects. But, it doesn't do frequency.

Can anyone recommend something that's in a decent price range? This is not a regular use product.

Clamp? no-clamp?

Also, on the subject of testing circuits in the house, has anyone had experience with this?

Thanks again

Pretty much anything manufactured by Fluke is pretty damn good.

Check out Dave Jone's EEV Blog on Youtube. He does DMM reviews regularly.

Although anything from Fluke is quite good, the issue is price - if you live in the United States, a Fluke 114 will set you back around $130 but without current measurements (you can always use your existing Southwire for that). A 115 or 117 will go higher.

A series of multimeters that are quite well built are from Klein: the MM400 has similar features as the Fluke 117 but it costs about $45. A more featured MM600 or MM700 (True RMS) will go up to $80.

Other options from Brymen (BM235, BM257) are much more featured than the Fluke 117 at the same cost and comparable build quality. They are good for electronics work as well.

I don't have experience with the energy monitor you linked.

My first question is , Do you have any other specific requirements for your new Multimeter other than frequency?
If you want a new inexpensive DMM there's a great new meter that is rock solid and quite accurate, it's not a fluke but will suffice for most general electronics/electrical needs , it also does Frequency/Duty Cycle- Win APEX ET8101 (15$ US),:

Secondly, I would not suggest a "clamp" meter unless you plan on doing electrical current measurements specifically.

As you mentioned your usage is only "intermittent", I would not recommend a Fluke/Brymen or similar priced DMM. these are great meters but you probably wouldn't use them to their full potential and why spend more money than needed.

If you are comfortable with a NON-Autoranging meter than the UNI-T UT39C+ (25$ US) is a great choice and it does Frequency to 1 Mhz but no duty cycle:
,Finally, If you prefer Auto-Ranging and demand better input protection then I would suggest the UNI-T UT139S (69.99$US) which has an incredibly gorgeous EBTN display! :

Cheers !
