Determining wire composition

I joined the wires a few days ago and the unit is working perfectly. This is my main string trimmer and kind of a flagship in the industry, no one will ever be borrowing it, especially when modified. The joints are well done and sheathed in shrink tube. I needed to get it back in the field so I haven’t added the switch but in past units that modification is enormously useful. One cool thing is when trimming a wood post fence, it’s difficult to get the corner nooks that don’t get the direct rotation, if a nice enough account, I switch the polarity and make another pass in the order direction.

I chose a location for the switch that won’t be bumped into the opposite direction by mistake, and one that has a shorter and stiff toggle. I’ve done this modification many times before and it truly is very functional in practice. The best one was with a Ryobi powerhead that had a Hall effect system where I not only had to make two motor wires reversible but also two of the sensor wires with a four pole two throw. This forum has been immensely helpful to me since I joined a few years ago and I graciously thank everyone who helps me through my electrical questions

I have wondered many times if I could do this type of reversal before the speed control, it would allow me to reverse the unit but dealing with a much lower current. It would be nice if I could maybe do a momentary button that was much smaller and situate it on the hand grip where I could quickly reverse the rotation for fence posts or to detangle the tool. Makita has that function and while I didn’t like the tool overall, it stuck in my mind as an option. Even if it is a possibility, in the past I’ve had to trial and error the hall sensor wiring and luckily didn’t let out the ghost. While Ego makes parts very accessible, I don’t want to have to buy a hundred something electrical set and wait a week to get it. Depending on how the forum responds to this question, I might experiment with an older ego unit as the wiring appears to follow the same design in the units I’ve gone into.

The bad news is that the speed control module contains polarity sensitive components and circuits and so the input supply polarity should never be reversed. Reversing between the controller and the motor can work, but doing it with the motor running can cause excess currents and voltages, so I do not recommend that at all.

If you burn a piece of wire in an acetylene (or butane blowtorch) flame and observe the colors, you can often get an idea of its composition from the colors.

Green indicates copper, blueish white indicates aluminum, unmistakable when you see the difference.
