Hi

I am looking for a simple guide to building dc power supplies for projects. Many years ago
I read a book called "Practical Solid State Circuit Design" by Jerome Oleksy. It was very straight
forward and easy to understand. Can't find it any where. Does anyone know where I might find
a free download of that book or find a comparable guide?

Thanks

Good choice, it includes section 8.2 CAPACITOR SELECTION on page 8-4. Something often left out of basic rectifier PSU design. Don't ignore it although the Voltage regulator does a pretty good job of smoothing the ripple out as well.

The first step for designing a power supply is deciding what sort of power you want: AC or DC, OR???
Then you need to decide what voltage your application requires, and how much power you want. THAT will determine the current capability of the supply.
After that come the details, including stability, ripple voltage (if it is a DC supply), and noise. The stability required will decide if the output will be regulated and how well it will be regulated.
In addition you need to decide how efficient the supply should be. AND eventually there will need to be a determination of how much the supply will cost.
Other options will be how adjustable the output should be, and if current limiting is needed.
After these details are decided then a circuit can be created and the variables can be implemented.
