Dell PSU stopped working, can you identify the blown component?

Hi All,

First post on this forum. I'm learning electronics in the last few months as my new hobby. I was wondering how would you approach repairing this PSU (Dell DPS 525 FP). I'm not sure if it has any other issues yet, but spotted this blown IC immediately. Any idea what is this (IC906)?

Thank you!

Board repairs are tricky and might not solve the problem. I mean, a failure of something else may have led to the destruction of that part.

Unless I'm mistaken, a replacement PSU can be very inexpensive. I certainly wouldn't waste time attempting a repair when I could get a replacement for under, say, $20. For $100, yeah, I might give it a try.

IC 906 looks to have had a bad day. The real problem is a toasted component is only a symptom and the cause is the real problem. Replace a toasted component only to watch the next one (replacement) also burn up. Dell was also notorious for making everything proprietary. No idea if that still holds true. Personally I would just remove and replace the PSU and hope the cause was limited to the PSU.

Thank you! I forgot to mention this PSU was heavily covered in dust, picture was taken after cleaning it and looking for blown components. I have already replaced the PSU and everything is running fine, just wanted to understand that how people would approach to solve these kind of failures if there was no other way :)

Too bad that you already cleaned it. It would have been nice to search for the blown off IC cover. You might have been able to read the IC part number.

Next approach is to find the same board and identify the IC.

You gave me me an idea to search for pictures of the same board (instead of schematic), found many similar ones (including the blown IC :D ). Unfortunately, couldn't find any with good enough resolution (and intact IC) to read the part number. There were some Chinese forums mentioning TNY267, will have look into that one...
