DC motor controller pcb used for treadmill

Hey everyone,

I’ve got an old treadmill that’s been around for a while, but unfortunately, I don’t have the original documentation that came with it. The motor controller recently failed, and I don’t have a circuit diagram for it. After doing some basic checks, I found that the driver transistor (IRFP460A) was blown. I replaced it, and the motor started working again, but there’s no speed control. When the motor is under heavy load, the transistor burns out again.

The speed feedback is managed by a reed magnetic relay, which I checked, and it seems fine.

I’m hoping someone here might have the circuit diagram for this controller so I can properly repair the PCB. I’ve attached a photo of the controller unit.

Thanks!

In my opinion, the lack of speed control might be due to issues in the gate driver circuit or nearby components affected when the IRFP460A blew:). I’ve actually had a similar experience, and in my case, a faulty resistor was the culprit. Without a circuit diagram, you might try checking those parts manually—hope this helps, and fingers crossed someone has the diagram!

Thanks for the suggestion. Btw, could the problem be with the PWM circuit that controls the IRFP460A?

Yeah, that’s likely. The PWM circuit handles speed control by adjusting voltage, so if I’m getting no speed adjustment, it might be due to a fault in that area.

I’ve checked a lot of things—replaced the transistor, inspected the PWM circuit, and tested nearby components. It’s just frustrating because without the circuit diagram, I feel like I’m poking around in the dark. I know there are resources out there, but I’m not sure where to find something specific for this controller. Do you have any advice on where I could dig up more detailed info?

Yeah.., I get it. There are some technical repositories that might help. You might be able to find similar motor controller diagrams or even guides that’ll give you a clearer picture of what might be going wrong.

I get it. Since we're on All About Circuits, I'd start here. The Projects and Circuits section has lots of user-uploaded diagrams and repair discussions—worth a look. You could also check Zenode.ai for schematics on older devices, and EEVblog has a great forum for electronics repair tips. Between these, you should find something helpful. If you need more options, there are other forums out there too, and I’d be happy to recommend a few more.

Perfect! I’ll dive into All About Circuits’ Projects section and check out Zenode.ai and EEVblog too. Thanks for the guidance!

Unfortunately very few, if any TM Manuf, publish a schematic, it usually falls to someone that has reverse-engineered the board.
There are a couple posted here for the most popular make, but I haven't come across the one you have, unfortunately!
