I want to use the DC output from a DAC to control the voltage output from a powersupply, 1-3 Amp, or with other words to boost the current output from the DAC, voltage range 0-12V DC. Any smart and cheap way to do this?

Do you have an off-the-shelf power supply unit (PSU) in mind? There are PSUs that will accept a control voltage input.
Otherwise you can roll your own with an op-amp and pass transistor.

An LM675 power op-amp is good for 3A.
