I'm learning about the cuk converter, and I don't understand why you have to add the first inductor to the design. Can't yu just charge the capacitor straight through the voltage source? Thank you

 

Well the first inductor and a switch act just like a boost coveter.

You can, but if you did the efficiency would be the same as a linear regulator (energy lost in the circuit and transistor resistances). You need the inductor to store energy so it can be efficiently converted from the input voltage to the output voltage.
