I am looking for a dip counter that can count up to 8 (0-7), but I don't know exactly what to look for. I think the NTE4022B would do the job nicely, but I don't know for sure.

I really want to make sure I get the right chip for my little project, so do any of you guys know any good, simple, inexpensive 8 counters?

 

There are many 4-bit counters available which can be made to count to 8 and stop or reset. The generic 4022 will be fine as long as you don't need to count much above about 1MHz maximum count frequency.
