This is bad, bad, bad... we have a saying down here that goes "When the US catches a cold, Mexico gets pneumonia"... Better be prepared for the worst

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, known as AMLO, traveled to the south of Mexico and met with adoring crowds, shaking hands and hugging and kissing supporters. During his daily press conferences, AMLO has insisted that his honesty and moral rectitude protect him from the virus, and that the threat of Covid-19 is greatly exaggerated. “I have great faith that we will move our dear Mexico forwards, that misfortunes and pandemics won’t affect us,” he told reporters at a press conference on Sunday.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...-drug-trials-yield-mixed-results-studies-show
Drug trials on coronavirus patients in China yielded mixed results, with an HIV pill showing little benefit and a flu medication made by Fujifilm Holdings Corp. resulting in faster clearance of the virus.

The combination of lopinavir and ritonavir, marketed by AbbVie Inc. as Kaletra, didn’t improve the condition of severe Covid-19 patients or prevent them from dying more than standard care in a randomized, controlled trial of 199 patients. The research was published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Hahn also highlighted another experimental treatment possibility that the FDA is investigating: Using plasma derived from blood taken from coronavirus patients who have recovered, and injecting that into other patients in an attempt to potentially jump start their own immune response.

“There’s a cross-agency effort about something called convalescent plasma,” he said. “This is a pretty exciting area. And again, this is something that we have given assistance to other countries with as this crisis has developed, so FDA has been working for some time on this. If you’ve been exposed to coronavirus and you’re better, you don’t have the virus in your blood. We could collect the blood now, this is a possible treatment. This is not a proven treatment, I just want to emphasize that, [but we would] collect the blood, concentrate that and have the ability, once it’s pathogen-free, that is virus-free, be able to give that to other patients and the immunoglobulins, the immune response could potentially provide a benefit to patients.”

China is just fine with what it's doing. It's how they think, It's normal to them.
china is barely removed by only less than a century from rule by warlords feuding for territorial control. The Russians tried to take advantage of it and introduced them to communism and they are still under the yoke of it. It is a country of recently primitive agrarian near enslaved people trying to come into the modern era and trying to overcome the disastrous human and economic effects of the "Cultural Revolution". They have tried to cram the "Industrial Revolution" and the "Electronic Age" both into less than 100 years of development by the theft of intellectual property and hiring outside engineers and contractors to provide that which they were unable to do themselves. Good communist comrades out to enslave the world by any means that they can. Read the recent century of the history of china...

In my town, most businesses are closed. All events canceled everywhere.
Here the local Populus is clueless... The local lunch spot is packed as usual, my sons' car club has a planned get-together meeting tonight and a Cruise-In, no bars, stores or eateries closed...
2 confirmed cases locally now and not just a couple of counties away. Instead of an office visit to our doctor today my wife had a Skype meeting with her instead.

Yes, an elderly tinderbox waiting for a spark and a hay truck to hit them. It's personal for me as I have an Italian half-brother close to 70 and his family in the hot zone.
I wish him and everyone nothing but the best. As I wrote in another post, families with elderly have the most responsibility to protect them. It is easier to do if they are cared for at home. I was often sick as a child and would be quaranteed to my room as my grandfather had health problems. All of this can be dealt with except the idiot factor :(

The CV pandemic is directly linked to the Chinese Government.
So you think our government had nothing to do with the outbreak and preparedness in the US? Their hands are dirty too.

Dismissing the warning and table games during transition had no influence? https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-appointees-trained-pandemic-response-in-2016-2020-3

Firing the national pandemic task force at the NSC had nothing to do with it? https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/trump-fire-pandemic-team/

Waiting to start preparing for it from 1/20/20 instead of starting then had nothing to do with it? https://foreignpolicy.com/2020/01/3...ited-states-public-health-emergency-response/

Sure, China dropped the bomb and our response to the bomb has been to destroy most of the worlds economic future for at least 18 months. That WH blame game is crumbs and vapors compared to the H-bomb equivalent China dropped on the world. Every country has, is or will get creamed by this virus and the virus just doesn't care about our petty political games.

I am sorry, but the world learned about what was going on in China in January and did not bother to take steps to isolate it. Playing catch up now is not going to help. Seem to remember a word "hoax" was used at some point?

The world and the people on it operate using basic rules of physics, human nature and systems of government are not exempt. There is a thing called inertia and we are always behind dynamic changes. The spool up time for where we are is about average and once the world is up to speed on this virus the amount of energy stored to kill it with be hard for governments to let go so there will be calls for us to throttle it back down before we really need to. We need to join the push to kick this, not waste too much energy in blame for the response time to it. There will be plenty of time for that when we can have a nice leisurely dinner at our favorite restaurant later.

This excellent book also sounded a warning bell that was largely ignored.

https://www.amazon.com/Great-Influenza-Deadliest-Pandemic-History/dp/0143036491

My take away was that it was just a matter of time until we were seriously screwed.

Frankly, we’re going to get off easy with Wuhan. Very easy. Two million dead in the U.S. will be a trifle compared to, say, a 30% kill rate or 100 million. Such a high kill rate is certainly possible and it’s just luck that Wuhan is not there. People would be more inclined to action but I don’t think we’d really do much better at containment even if Wuhan was far more deadly.

We have far fewer hospital beds per capita than we had a century ago. Even this “mild” virus is going to overwhelm the system.

https://www.sandiegouniontribune.co...-california-1-billion-federal-aid-coronavirus
SACRAMENTO —
Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday ordered all Californians to stay at home, marking the first mandatory restrictions placed on the lives of all 40 million residents in the state’s fight against the novel coronavirus.
The governor’s action comes at a critical time in California, where 19 people have died and an additional 958 have tested positive for the disease.
The mandatory order allows Californians to continue to visit gas stations, pharmacies, grocery stores, farmers markets, food banks, convenience stores, take-out and delivery restaurants, banks and laundromats. People can leave their homes to care for a relative or a friend or seek health care services. It exempts workers in 16 federal critical infrastructure sectors, including food and agriculture, healthcare, transportation, energy, financial services, emergency response and others.
https://www.cisa.gov/critical-infrastructure-sectors
There are 16 critical infrastructure sectors whose assets, systems, and networks, whether physical or virtual, are considered so vital to the United States that their incapacitation or destruction would have a debilitating effect on security, national economic security, national public health or safety, or any combination thereof. Presidential Policy Directive 21 (PPD-21): Critical Infrastructure Security and Resilience advances a national policy to strengthen and maintain secure, functioning, and resilient critical infrastructure. This directive supersedes Homeland Security Presidential Directive 7.

PPD-21 identifies 16 critical infrastructure sectors:
Chemical Sector

Commercial Facilities Sector

Communications Sector

Critical Manufacturing Sector

Dams Sector

Defense Industrial Base Sector

Emergency Services Sector

Energy Sector

Financial Services Sector

Food and Agriculture Sector

Government Facilities Sector

Healthcare and Public Health Sector

Information Technology Sector

Nuclear Reactors, Materials, and Waste Sector

Transportation Systems Sector

Water and Wastewater Systems Sector

In NJ all schools have been closed.

Does anyone know how long the onset of the virus lasts? Like if someone gets it how long before it goes away for them?

There’s a timeline someone put together that shows exactly what you’re asking. I believe it’s 3-4 days with no symptoms and then about 10 to get back to normal and to test negative. That’s if your case is normal.
