Hey y’all,

Thanks for taking some time to help me out!

So I have two headphone jacks. They are both from ‘old’ headphones, the ‘old’ headphones worked fine.

I just needed a cable with a 3,5mm jack on one end and a 2,5mm jack on the other end. Of course I can buy one, but why not try it myself first?

I have cut off both cables and stripped all four bits (as you can see in the picture).
Now I have no Idea which cable should be soldered to which cable.

Can you help me out? I have put numbers next to the wires to make it easy (example: 2&5 should be connected), and color coded them as they are in reality.

Also if you can give me an explanation for why, that would be appreciated.
I just don't understand why there are two different wire-bundles in the same cable without any isolation between them...

Audio cables need to be shielded, i.e. an inner insulated conductor with an outside braided shield.

The inner conductor is the signal cable. The shield is connected to COMMON.
There are a two pairs for headphones, one pair for the LEFT channel and the second pair for the RIGHT channel.

The audio plugs shown have only three contact points for four wires. Hence the COMMON (or GROUND) from each channel are joined together at the plug and jack.
