I found this chart in the CMOS Cookbook. I tried the divide by 6 and the divide by 10
configurations but neither worked. I have attached the page from the book as well as
a schematic for the two configurations that I tried. The input is a 5 volt 6KHz square
wave. Please tell me where I have gone wrong.

Thanks

Wrong. The Preset Enable (Pin 10) needs to be grounded but not the Jam pins.
As soon as I removed the ground from those pins, the counter worked flawlessly.
That's strange. I've just breadboarded one with pins 2,3,7,8,9,10,12 & 15 grounded, and it works fine! As long as 10 & 15 are grounded it doesn't matter which way the jam pins are tied!

You are right! The first two CD4018s that I tried are obviously defective as all
my others work with pins grounded. Never had defective ICs from a well
known supplier, just from a surplus type store, occasionally. I should have tried
more before sounding the alarm! My apologies.I guess my major birthday on
Monday is affecting me adversely, ie. I am an Old Phart.
