Here is what I was thinking..
The diode will conduct when the prox output is low, thereby pulling the Z_min S pin down to about 0.7v, because of the voltage across the diode.
When the prox output is high, the diode will not conduct so the Z_min S pin will be at 5V due to the pullup resistor on the Marlin board.
