This discussion certainly has wandered a long way from the question as to why a low power varistor was connected across a set of high power jumper cables. I was really amazed at the number of posters telling us that "It must do something worthwhile or else nobody would sell it." This conclusion that every product offered for sale by anybody must certainly be well designed and provide a needed function. That conclusion does not agree with what I have observed.

 

Your phone still looks like this? Can't imagine any other phone that would use a18650 cell.

The greater context was "Li-ion" cells not the 18650 alone. If you understood that a cell phone probably doesnt have an 18650 then you should have automatically figured out that the 18650 reference was just for that alone and maybe the flashlight. Dont use them in a camera either that would be kind of nutty.
