It may not be a capacitor, there are also varistors that look like that, and it looks blue to me. Was it on a circuit board? and is this one of those front load machines that has a motor that is constantly reversing? If it is a capacitor then it should not have faioled like that. If it was on a circuit board, please post a photo of the board so that we can see how the location was labeled. If it did not have a "C" designation then it is probably not a capacitor. There are also PTC thermistors designed to provide circuit protection.

Thanks for replies, this is part of the pcb, you can see a 'c' code.
Yes, it is a front loading machine and it failed on a hot wash, if that could make a difference...
The resistor next to it was pretty blackened aswell.

It looks like the smoke from the capacitor covered the resistor. So it may still be OK. And I think that I also see evidence of smoke under that IC, U4. So the next thing to do will be to check all of the diodes for being short circuited. Do you have a circuit diagram for that board? Or for the whole machine? Some times the service information is hidden inside the machine, possibly in the controls area. It will be worth searching for that paper. And possibly we could get a picture of the whole circuit board? Foil side too? That will assist us in figuring what component lead to the capacitor failure.
