Hi everyone, i'm building a model elevator for an engineering project at school. I want to build it as three levels (ground, middle and top) but i am having difficulty getting it to work on paper. I just can't see how you can make the motor distinguish upwards movement from downwards movement in order to reach and stop at the middle floor. I just can't think of a way to get it to work, it doesnt help that i want to have only three buttons (1,2 and 3) to tell it which floor to go to. If anyone has any ideas or advice..i'd appreciate it.

You need some type of sensor to let the controls know when the car is at a given floor. They don't have to be switches. They can be optical sensors, Hall effect sensors, or anything else which might detect the proximity of the car.
