Oh what a utopia you have in your mind. Do you think it's proper for the President of the U.S. to beg each and every person to go to an assignment? I'm sure they are called "orders". Do you remember when Clinton sent troops into Bosina as part of a U.N. Mission? There was one young soldier who "refused" an order to wear the Blue UN cover. He was court martialed. They are not "invitations".
Quoting your post for the 2nd time.

I completely misunderstood your post on first read, my response (post #66) was the result of this mis-reading. But evidently, you didn't understand when I said soldiers should "pick and choose" what missions to to on, I was illustrating the disproportionate sacrifice they make to the sacrifices made in their names. A nation that demands ultimate sacrifice is responsible for ultimate care for those who get the job done. That's ESPECIALLY true now that, increasingly, a smaller number of men and women sacrifice for everyone.

I can agree about the ultimate sacrifices. The changing missions because this country doesn't have the political wherewithal only leads to more sacrifices. We can always expect boots on the ground because it will take boots on the ground to drag someone out of the caves and urban areas. There will never be an endgame in today's conflicts because of the shifting political winds.

I wonder if historians will view the pull out of Iraq as the genesis of ISIS' gains in land acquisition.

In 1972 my draft number was 263. I enlisted in Oct 1972. I was not one of the 646 inductees.

p.s. No political wherewithal is spoken with both parties in mind and has been that way since my birth.

One wonders if any war can be won in the age of television and the internet. Enemies that are so clearly evil that there is wide public support for their defeat, require stealth and silence to work their evil, at least while they get started. Victors require a bit of leeway, a looking the other way, to engage in the horrible acts that win wars. When you have real-time streaming of the reality of war, few have the stomach for it. The Viet Nam war, for instance, was lost first on TV.

As I have pointed out previously, evolution of the human race is shown to be tied to tribalism, the numbers of humans that died at the hands of other humans, Genocide, War etc, in the 20th century alone are estimated to be at between 200m to 300m people.
Interestingly our closest animal relatives (the apes) exhibit exactly the same behavior, Except Bonobos, which we share most of our DNA, they do not kill each other.
They are however a matriarchal society and are obsessed with SEX!
I guess their credo is they are lovers not fighters!:D
Tribalism could be evolution's way of controlling the population?

I agree. I said nearly the same thing in another recent post. I think we are wired to thin our own herd. That, coupled with plague and famine, kept our numbers pretty much a straight line on a graph (as long as you scale the graph to current population) since the beginning of recorded history. In the recent past, we all but conquered plague and famine, leaving only our self destructive tendencies to manage our growth. Humans: 1, evolution: 0. But I think it's a case of hare and tortoise. That evolutionary buzzkill ought to catch up with us any time now.

Opinion is the lowest form of human knowledge. It requires no accountability and no understanding. The highest form on knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires a profound purpose larger than the self kind of understanding. ~Bill Bullard.

BS. Empathy requires suspension of thought, cognitive dissonance, and evasion of reality. Such is the requirement of any altruistic creed.
