This is a cool story, would make for a good movie (or 3). But what are the odds it will actually happen? $15M sounds like a lot of money to most people but it's probably less than would be needed to purchase a small building and outfit it even half way as a genetics lab. Maybe it is interesting enough to be crowdfunded though? It would be something unprecedented.

Right... a project like this one, if successful, can be much more profitable than a meager 15M ... perhaps that money will only cover a demonstration of some proof of concept?

Profitable? How so? The gut assumption that my first reply was based on, is that it wouldn't be Profitable, just cool, hence crowd funding as one of the only the sources of seed money (a bunch of people that just want to see something cool). But maybe I didn't think it all the way through.
