Are we talking about a principle, or a person that expressed it. Where were you schooled?
Both actually. I think Joey999 quoted Rand here:

Colorado University. BSEE. Obviously not philosophy. :D

Thank you. You help make the point that this can't be supported by facts in either case.
Principle:

A fundamental assumption or guiding belief.

Similar to philosophy, I think.

a system of principles for guidance in practical affairs.

The principle of self interest didn't need a qualifying adjective until lately.

The principle is not economic, it's the reality of human interaction. We are self interest.

Realize it and study it. It has good and necessary parts and also deceitful and greedy parts.

Isn't this self evident?

And for you to suppose that I thought it was shows your aptitude for logical thinking and, well, reading.
And for you to suppose it was up to us to show where a logic is in error, while it has not been shown where it is, in fact, true and correct, shows your lack of aptitude for logical thinking.

That has no bearing on the quality of her reasoning. It's equal to an ad hominem attack to avoid confronting the logic. (Responded to #140)

"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference."

I'm an atheist so the word God does not apply in this case in the same sense as religion does, yet I believe in a god and it has no consciousness as far as I know, just the laws of what we call physics. It governs our lives in a lot of ways but in so many ways we humans make things worse as a whole when we could little by little make it better for us and others.

Joey said it is selflessness that is the problem but I'm fearing that selfishness is far worse.

Yeah I know that it's an AA favourable quote but I've never been to a meeting, yet it has made sense to me since i was little.

I live by the same prayer and also am an atheist. And like the AA folks believe in a higher power of some sort. In my case it is the creation of the universe.
I think I see where @BR-549 is going. We need to be selfish for survival.... But we also need the protection of others or we would surely be picked off one by one.:(
So see, it's just mostly about me. :D

The description Atheist.
I am not a Theist, if anything an Evolutionist.
I tend to agree with Dr Neil Degrasse Tyson, when asked if he was, he said me saying I am a Atheist is like me saying I am a non-golfer, it doesn't describe what I am, rather what I am not.

Yes, agnostic is a better term.

He give money free to people in need.
Remember that old saying about giving a man a fish vs. teaching a man to fish?

Sometimes, selfish motivations can lead to unselfish acts which can have deadly consequences on the recipients of such charity. I am a firm believer that many times the best help you can give someone is no help.

In the spirit of the season, I just want to reiterate that many charitable acts are successful. The following example comes to mind.

I wonder what might have come from re-investing those profits in other research.

I agree with this statement on many levels. We are not here and now, just to have a picnic or to play with the latest gadget. Dealing with life shapes us. Winning or loosing is meaningless, it is putting all that you have into responding to life that burns away the baby fat and you start to discover who and what you really are.
